Inspired by the hero of the Jules Verne novel, Around the World in Eighty Days, we set out in 2001 to circumnavigate the globe like Phileas Fogg. Like Fogg, we set out from London to make our way around the globe and back to London in less than eighty days. Although our route did not exactly retrace the route of the novel, we traveled in the same spirit as Verne’s hero by using only surface transportation: trains, ships, buses and automobiles – without using airplanes.
We posted updates on the road so friends and family could follow our travels. Since this was the dark days before prevalent WiFi and all sorts of social media, we were limited to internet cafes we could find in various cities. For this reason, our posts were often infrequent and gave a tantalizing but incomplete picture.
These postings are archived here – along with a few pictures from the trip to make the reading less painful.
Enjoy!!
