May 3, 2001 (Day 57): Regal Princess, Aleutian Island en route to Seward, Alaska – 11pm
Health: OK. Anna is experiencing some pains in her mouth. Hoping it is getting better.
Morale: Good. Am worried about the state of America. After many days at sea, we have regained satellite TV coverage. Watching CNN this evening, we saw that the Larry King show was host by Pat Sajak who was interviewing Rush Limbaugh. Surely this is a sign of the end of days.
One more lazy day. Slept in until after noon. I tell myself that I am catching up on lost sleep. It is amazing how tiring doing nothing can be. Staggered down for “breakfast” and shared a table with Earl and Jeanne. They are pretty well traveled. They shared stories about requiring oxygen while visiting Peru and the experience of seeing the Iguassu Falls, the large horseshoe-shaped falls between Brazil and Argentina and UNESCO World Heritage Site. I noticed she was wearing the seasick patch. The seas were rough again today, but I am still doing well.
Today’s big adventure was laundry and watching as we sailed past Kodiak Island. Saw no bears. Then there was an excellent cruise enhancement lecture on glaciers given by the resident naturalist, Rachel. Anna has been attending these seminars and has had great things to say about them.
Tonight was a semi-formal dress night with a cocktail party first. The theme was American with American-made liquor featured and the band playing American songs like “Route 66” and “God Bless America”. There I heard the best description of those who are on this cruise with us: “the newlywed and nearly dead.”
A full table at dinner tonight. Ron regaled us with an off-color story about the other religion formed by Brigham Young. Add to this his typical obsession about money. It reminds me what a wonderful spouse I have.
My Maltese grandfather shared some great stories. George’s comments will get us to Malta yet. He talks about the antiquities there and the history of the island with such inamorata. He is sad about the handling and protection of its treasures, noting a recent story involving the vandalizing of the Neolithic megaliths.
After sleeping in so much today, we opted for coming back to the room for an early night. We are in Seward tomorrow. We have nothing formally scheduled but hope to find an Internet place and a good cup of coffee. Anna is hoping to see the Sea Life Center also.
There was pink in the sky this evening after the sun went down. Should bode well for tomorrow. Hopefully clear and not too cold.
Excerpts from Anna’s journal included
