April 27, 2001 (Day 52): Regal Princess, North Pacific – 11pm
Health: Same old cold. Getting bored of it.
Morale: good. We keep losing hours as we travel east.
Finding ways to keep busy. I made myself get up and walk over a mile before breakfast. Lesser activities included getting out passports in preparation for US Customs, inventoried our stuff so that we will remember exactly what we packed for this trip, and a nap. Anna made it to a lecture on reflexology. We also took the opportunity to sit in the outdoor hot tub – it is about 20 yards from our cabin – and watch the seas. The chill in the air is becoming more pronounced. It even began snowing tonight.
The seas are a bit rougher today, not unlike a bit of turbulence in an airplane. Extra seasickness bags have been made available, placed next to the waste bins in the hallways. The “Do Not Disturb” signs became more common later in the day. My Maltese grandparents, George and Amy, were not down for dinner tonight. Considering her stated displeasure about being at sea for so many consecutive days, I am not surprised. I am still feeling fine, though. Touch wood.
Kay, the travel agent on our winning trivia team, threw a party tonight for her clients – and us. She was not feeling well so she did not attend. George and Pearl were there, though. Chatted with some of the people there and got to meet Bob, a.k.a. Santa Claus. Not surprisingly, he takes advantage of his likeness to St. Nick – beard and all – and does, in fact, play Santa. He takes it very seriously and it was fun to hear some of his stories. He shared a picture of a little girl giving him a kiss. Apparently she had started out pretty shy, but they read some books together and she became his friend. The saddest one was a woman who brought her dog to have its picture taken with Santa, as the woman’s young children looked on. He does not pose with pets after that. One time, he lost an opportunity to play Santa when he was required to wear a fake beard, regardless of his complete real beard. “Policy,” he was told.
Tonight’s competition was kind of like the name game where you have to get your team members to say the name of a person, place, or thing. No hand gestures but you can say anything about this thing except its name. You get points based on the number you complete in a certain amount of time. In our team of six, Anna and I were volunteered to represent the group up front for two of the three rounds. We won – it was umbrellas this time. Winning is nice.
