Posts from the Road…

March 6, 2001 – London
T minus two days and counting.
We have made it to London. So far, so good. The trip over was wonderfully uneventful. We are still a little jet-lagged, but nothing more serious than that.
So far today, we have wandered through the Great Court in the British Museum, something that was not open the last time we were in London. They have put a glass ceiling over the central courtyard, enclosing it and the Reading Room. It is very nice on sunny days like today.
Hopefully the weather will continue to hold. It is clear but kind of chilly, not so bad in our warm coats. This afternoon we are going up in the London Eye, a huge Ferris Wheel on the bank of the Thames just across from the Houses of Parliament. It should offer a great view of the city.
Thank you for all of the great notes on the message board. We enjoy hearing from you and keeping in touch.
London
Acclimating to European time. Staying in our typical haunt close to the British Museum.
Today’s adventures took us through the Great Court at the British Museum. They have completed the wave-shaped roof that now encloses the courtyard and the Reading Room. The result is bright and airy, enhanced by the sunshine on a day like today.
The clear-ish weather made for a stunning ride on the London Eye, the giant Ferris Wheel set up on the banks of the Thames across from Parliament. Last time we visited tickets were almost impossible to get, so we learned to reserve in advance. The cars on the London Eye are like over sized glass eggs, each able to hold about 20 people. It was designed as part of the Millennium celebrations as a symbol of time: a wheel incessantly turning. It was discovered, however, that it is difficult to load and unload a constantly moving contraption.
For this reason, time stops at regular intervals.
